The core of our ministry is to fulfill the mission statement of Barnabas International:
“The mission of Barnabas International is to edify, encourage, and strengthen servants in ministry. We creatively seek ways to fulfill our charter through personal, small group, and conference ministries. Our ministry priorities are targeted toward missionaries, pastors, national church leaders, and their families."

I went to Sunday School through high school but never heard the Gospel. It was the summer before my senior year in high school that I began my search for more substance in Christianity than what I had been exposed to.

My father was a traveling salesman for the safety shoe company founded by his grandfather. He was away from home five days a week and in the summers the entire family traveled with him. By the age of eleven I had been in 48 states and traveled in over seventeen countries. Upon graduation from high school in 1977, my parents gave me a trip to any place of my choice. Remembering the Soviet flags I had seen flying in Prague in 1970, I chose to go to the Soviet Union. Although I was not yet a believer, that summer trip to Leningrad would have a tremendous impact on my future desire to serve Christ in the Soviet Union.

Having been to Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union before I became a Christian, I immediately decided to be involved in that area of the world once I did make a commitment to Christ. In fact I was determined to start the first mission to the Soviet Union when I realized, the first time I was in a Christian bookstore, that such a mission, Slavic Gospel Association, had been in existence for over forty years. I visited SGA for the first time in the summer of 1978, and came to study at their Institute of Slavic Studies in January 1982. That spring I heard about the ministry of Biblical Education by Extension (BEE) for the first time.
Cheryl and I were accepted to missionary service in March 1985 and were with BEE until April 1992 when we joined the staff of Barnabas International.
The core of our ministry is to fulfill the mission statement of Barnabas International

As a graduate student at Wheaton College, my eyes were opened to needs around the world. I began to see that God could use my skills in journalism and editorial work overseas. As my relationship with Charley deepened, we talked about working together in theological education in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, with my role being that of a curriculum editor. After we were married and had both graduated with master's degrees in missions/intercultural studies, I worked as a book editor for a Christian publisher. I loved my work, but seeing the heavy concentration of publications for Christians in the American market, I was even more convinced of the need for publishing professionals to work overseas where there is a shortage of materials. It simply made sense to go where the need is greatest. - Cheryl |
